For this year’s Theater Commons Tokyo, we interpret the act of “translating” broadly as an act of creative transformation by humans, and present a range of their variations through several performances. From one language to another, from visual to auditory, from vibratory to tactile—there is a mutual interaction that is born out of the process of “translating,” and a creativity that incorporates the pleasure and transgression of corporeal humans. Where will all of that go when AI performs the majority of this work at extreme speed with ultra-precision?
Before the fully-fledged age of AI arrives, we would like to use this forum for a free discussion—specifically from the side of “translation/creation”—while listening to the words of the creators behind several works/performances that will be presented at Theater Commons Tokyo. Will the theater of the future become a place where humans go to confirm that they are indeed human? Or what other possibilities might there be?

Art Translators Collective
Based in Tokyo, Art Translators Collective is an organization specializing in translation, interpretation, and project planning/organization in the field of contemporary art. Working alongside art practitioners and participating in creative processes as active collaborators, we aim to produce meaningful dialogue through translation and interpretation that surpass mere conversion of language.
Shuntaro Matsubara
Born in Kumamoto City in 1988, Shuntaro Matsubara is a playwright. Unusually in Japan, he works as an independent playwright not affiliated permanently with a specific theatre company. In 2015, his debut play En Route, won the 15th AAF Drama Award given by Aichi Prefectural Arts Theater. He won the 63rd Kishida Kunio Drama Award for Yamayama (I Would Prefer Not To). His other works include Alice in Wonderlight, Dance Dance Revolutions, and Impossible Gag. Novels include Tell the Truth and To the Dog.
Kanoko Tamura
Representative and Co-Director of Art Translators Collective. As an Art Translator, Tamura
conducts translation, interpreting, and communication design. While
exploring the possibilities of translation from the perspective of a mediator standing between people, cultures, and languages, she proposes creative ways to hold a dialogue in a given occasion. Tamura has been teaching English and communication for young artists at Global Art Practice MFA program, Tokyo University of the Arts. She also worked as Director of Communication Design for Sapporo International Art Festival 2020 to mediate between the festival and the audience. She is a member of Arts Commons Tokyo.
