- Lecture performance
A “live video essay” performance by a Germany-based translator and video artist.
The world is constantly changing in ways we cannot control. A hometown street becomes unrecognizable, the meaning of a folk song shifts in valence, a republic faces its inevitable decline and fall. How have our struggles with this finitude found expression through myth, memory, or mourning?
Drawing on family history, urban space, the formations of American patriotic songs, and the work of anthropologist Talal Asad, video artist and translator Lillian Canright produces a lecture performance-cum-live video essay.
Profile
Lillian Canright
Lillian Canright received her BA from Bard College and MFA from Tokyo University of the Arts. Formally and thematically drawing on the traditions of performance video art and the essay film, her work most often takes the form of semi-fictional documentary collages, unified by a DIY ethos and an unreliable and unstable “I” voice. Since 2023, she has collaborated with feminist theater director Marie Schleef, creating video for plays such as “The Possibility of Evil” (Münchner Kammerspiele, 2024) and “The Vegetarian” (Akademietheater, 2025).
