The suspended sensations and words of youth living in states of emergency.
Through the cine-essay, how will we gaze upon the gaze of these young people?

Filmmaker and artist Yuko Nakamura has earned high praise for her unique visual lexicon that tangibly captures subtle movements, seen in works such as A Room of Her Own: Rei Naito and Light. She has also published Mothering: Our Voice, Our Care in Modern Society, a grand, philosophical series of essays in search of moments where mothering takes place, breaking new ground in women’s literature. At Theater Commons Tokyo ’21, Nakamura experimented with visual expression in the interactive AR film, Suspended, which garnered much positive attention.
Focusing on the cine-essay method (where images are spelled out as if writing an essay), Nakamura will develop a workshop to explore new horizons of visual expression and prose. The results of the workshop will be exhibited as an installation. The subjects of the workshop are the youth of today, whose adolescence is taking place in the midst of a pandemic. Natural disasters, COVID-19, distant wars…these young people have had to live in a “state of emergency” since childhood. What kind of suspended sensations will emerge when their everyday experiences are manifested in the form of a cine-essay? The cine-essay is also a critical reflection of the audience themselves. How will the audience gaze upon the gazes of these youths?
