Monira Al Qadiri & Raed Yassin [Kuwait, Lebanon / Germany]
"Suspended Delirium"

  • Theatrical Installation

Humans and dolls; sanity and madness; reality and phantasm.
Presenting a robotic performance where the confusion of midair suspension generates poetic language.

Monira Al Qadiri and Raed Yassin are artists from Kuwait and Lebanon, respectively. They live together in Berlin, where, with a critical eye toward their native Middle East and with approaches that blend aspects of subculture and technology, they have pioneered unique expressive forms.

This work was born from the dialogues of two people driven into isolation by extreme situations: the lockdowns of the coronavirus crisis; the huge explosion in August 2020 that destroyed Yassin’s hometown of Beirut. The three robots, modeled after the heads of the two artists and their pet cat, move in eerie synchronization, as programmed by media artist So Kanno. Their conversation takes place poetically, fragmentally, thrown into a state of derangement by the pandemic. What disturbing effect will this “midair madness” have on us as we continue to live through these times?

Profile

Monira Al Qadiri
At the age of 16 Monira Al Qadiri moved from Kuwait to study in Japan, and received her Ph.D. in Intermedia Art from Tokyo University of the Arts. She works in a variety of mediums, including video, sculpture, and installation, bringing together her early fascination with Japanese anime and her acute insight on the Middle East, where she was born and raised. Al Qadiri blends phenomena that society and religion have deemed separate —the sacred and the profane, men and women, the dead and the living, good and evil—transgressing these boundaries with her unique sorrow and humor.
In recent years, she participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the Athens Biennale 2018 and the Sharjah Biennial 2019, and presented performance works at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2017 and the Aichi Triennale 2019. In 2020, she held a solo exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. She is currently based in Berlin.
