Artist Bady Dalloul was born to a Syrian family and grew up in France. His interests span politics, sociology, and history. Composed as collages of film, text, and performance, Dalloul’s works observe fiction and reality and encourage dialogue between the two to question methods of writing history. His art has been exhibited or acquired by institutions including Paris’s Kadist Foundation, Palais de Tokyo, and the Arab World Institute, gaining him traction as an emerging contemporary artist.
In 2015, Dalloul traveled to Japan for a long-term stay and produced a feature-length film connecting personal histories with various regions affected by global catastrophe, including Hiroshima, Palestine, and Syria. In January 2021, he visits the country again for a four-month research residency at Villa Kujoyama. For TCT’21, he will host a two-day intensive workshop based on research and dialogue. The program will include many elements, spanning a lecture-performance by Dalloul, guest researchers’ presentations, and fieldwork in Minato ward. Participants will travel through personal and grand historical narratives and re-examine Tokyo from the Middle East and the Arab world.
