Come join our workshop for mutual education on crisis management in art production to protect and
nurture creativity and freedom of expression.

Many arts festivals and cultural events are held across Japan. As these projects increase in number and frequency prior to the Olympics, the arts become more accessible to society and a range of opinions and criticisms follow suit. This will likely increase the potential risk of malicious attacks.
In response to these circumstances, we at Theater Commons Tokyo have developed a workshop for mutual education through the perspectives of different positions related to arts festivals. This involves organizers, committee offices, grant organizations, and participating artists. We invite instructors including members of the J Art Call Center created through Aichi Triennale 2019, arts festival office staff members, lawyers, and experts in crisis management. Through lectures and group exercises, participants will share and exchange their insights.

*This workshop is mainly designed for professionals working in programming, operations, and management for arts and culture projects and institutions (including those who work for governmental and grant institutions, arts festival offices, art non-profits, and content creators for art projects.) Please be sure to read the Note before applying.

Profile

J Art Call Center
J Art Call Center is a limited liability company formed by theater director Akira Takayama following the temporary closure of the “After ‘Freedom of Expression?’” exhibition at the Aichi Triennale 2019, as a countermeasure against the flooding of phone lines experienced by the art festival. In the seven days of the exhibition’s reopening, the artists and curators supporting ReFreedom_Aichi took protest calls and engaged in direct dialogue with the protestors. The company expects to continue its work uninterrupted as a theater project that can be brought to bear against real-life social issues.
